2013 Challenges I've taken up and general challenge thoughts

So... challenges. I confess I am not usually a fan of them, or at least I didn't use to be. Why? They tend to nag at the back of my mind. In my language I'd say 'Si liged mer ofem Mage.' (they lie on my stomach. Like something heavy in your stomach you cannot quite digest).
I feel pressured by them.
I cannot forget about them.
I don't deal too well with long-term projects because then I end up having soooo many things I should remember at the back of my mind and I don't like it because it makes me feel continually stressed.

Flipside: It can be motivating! Last year, I participated in the Soul Screamers Reading Challenge that Rachel from Fiktshun hosted. That challenge got me not only into the Soul Screamers books but also made me write my first reviews and is eventually responsible for my decision to start my own blog! I also participated in a month-long sequels challenge and that helped get rid of some books that had been unread on my shelf for too long. Oh, and I completed my Goodreads challenge to read 100 books. It was 107 or 108, I think.

So... what's for 2013?

As I said, I don't want to sign up for to much because it will only make me feel stressed. I like to have some freedom to pick whatever book appeals to me at a certain moment. One challenge I've already signed up for is the 2013 Reading Pile Challenge that is about reading books published in 2012 or earlier. You can see my sign up post here, and I've also transferred it to its own page (see below the header) and updated the info somewhat.

I've also set my goal at Goodreads for 100 again. I will try for 110, but I have to get started with my Master Thesis this year and that means lots of non-fiction research reading that is very time intensive...

I have after some thinking also decided to participate in the following:

The 2013 Sequel Challenge is hosted by Auntie Spinelli. Click the button to sign up. I like this one because it lets you determine the number of books you want to read by yourself. There will also be some giveaways during the year, as well as one at the end. You can sign up anytime.
I have a lot of sequels to catch up on, so I think this one will complete itself pretty much automatically. But I don't want to limit my reading choices too much, so I'm setting my goal at 20. I might upgrade the number throughout the year though.

I've also decided to participate in the new Adult Reading Challenge hosted by Danya from A Tapestry of Words, Victoria from Confessions of a Twenty Something Fiction Writer (she is also a member of the NA Alley blog), Tara from Tater's Tall Tails, and Barbara from Basia's Bookshelf. Click the button for all the rules and possibilities.
If you're not sure what New Adult is, they have quite a good description on the sign-up post that also explains that NA is not just contemporary fiction! I've decided to sign up because I have quite a lot of NA kindle books piling up I never seem to get to, and still more on my TBR list... I like how many of these books deal with university students! I'm almost 24. I like to read about those characters & experiences instead of the never-ending highschool tales of YA. (Though those are interesting to me too because I've never gone to highschool in that way because the system is different here).

There are for levels to the challenge and because as I said, I don't like committing to something that might limit my reading choices too much, I've decided to go for the Moving Out level, which means I pledge to read a minimum of 10 NA books.

Among them:
  • The Secret of Ella & Micha, by Jessica Sorensen
  • Clash, by Nicole Williams
  • Derailed, by Alyssa Rose Ivy
  • Easy, by Tammara Webber
  • Tidal, by Emily Snow
  • My Favorite Mistake, by Chelsea M. Cameron
  • On Dublin Street, by Samantha Young
  • The Jelly Bean Crisis, by Jolene Stockman
  • Taking Chances, by Molly McAdams
  • Flight, by Alyssa Rose Ivy
Oops, that actually is 10 already... but we'll see how many I get to. Taking Chances is one I got for review for instance, so I'm going to privilege it over others. And I don't want to read NA all the time.

So yeah... I guess this is it! What do you think of my challenge goals and my attitude to them? How do you feel about them, and what have you signed up for? Tell me in the comments :)

4. Someone that’s not looking for trouble, but there’s a serious sense of danger about him.
We love danger!
Usable Note: A bad boy is a gorgeous man with MANY layers and is INSANELY irresistible to women.
*raises hands*… YES PLEASE!

So there you have it :P Now here's the choice of books I have for ONE winner. All of them feauture either some long-time bad book boyfriend of mine, or a bad boy I haven't met but am fairly certain will be added to my personal list ;)

Waiting on Wednesday: A Darkness Strange & Lovely, by Susan Dennard

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine to spotlight upcoming book releases that we're excited for. My pick this week:

Expected release: July 23, 2013
Publisher: HarperTeen
Format: Hardcover, 416 pages

Goodreads description:
Following an all-out battle with the walking Dead, the Spirit Hunters have fled Philadelphia, leaving Eleanor alone to cope with the devastating aftermath. But there’s more trouble ahead—the evil necromancer Marcus has returned, and his diabolical advances have Eleanor escaping to Paris to seek the help of Joseph, Jie, and the infuriatingly handsome Daniel once again. When she arrives, however, she finds a whole new darkness lurking in this City of Light. As harrowing events unfold, Eleanor is forced to make a deadly decision that will mean life or death for everyone.

I adored Something Strange & Deadly!!! Read my review here, if you like.  At the end of it, Eleanor really was in a bad spot, and apparently she's left to her own devices. I can't wait to see how she masters that, and how the story will unfold in Paris! Oh, and there's of course Daniel, and their awesome banter. And Susan Dennard once posted a teaser involving an airship!! Plus, look at that stunning cover. Notice the subtle differences to the first one. If you'd read it, you know why she has her arm behind her back...

What do you think of my pick? Are you also impatient? What did you pick this week?

Top Ten Tuesday: Bookish Goals for 2013

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Every week, they will post a topic on their blog that the participants draw up their on top ten list for.

This week is all about bookish goals for 2013, and personally I'm also taking bloggish goals into account.

  1. Refrain from requesting too many review books. I still have so many Netgalley books on my kindle that I need to read&review, and I will now do that before requesting any new ones. After that, I want to catch up on non-review books, especially ebooks.

  2. Read a bit more widely again. This year was extremely focused on YA, even though I also got into contemporary after reading nearly only fantasy/paranormal for many many years. In the coming year, I want to read some more adult books again, as well as some more Classic authors I've been meaning to get to for a while.

  3. Finally read all those New Adult titles on my kindle!!

  4. Catch up on serieses. The TBR reading challenge I'm participating in should take care of that, I've also been contemplating joining the sequels challenge hosted by Auntie Spinelli Reads.

  5. Re-read! I love re-reading, and there are so many books on my shelves, especially ones I read in my teens, that I've been itching to re-read. But with all the new books I buy all the time, I just never get around to it. I want to change that.

  6. Write more reviews, and write them right after finishing the book when it's still fresh on my mind. I'm a quick reader (108 books last year) but I don't review even half of what I read. Like, I'm all pumped for writing that review, but then I'm somehow scared to start or something or the moment is inconvenient and then it just never happens...

  7. Read more steampunk and dystopian.

  8. Write more. I don't know if that is necessarily a bookish goal, but there you have it.

  9. Try to, depite everything, not stress too much about things (haha...). But seriously. This should be fun! I love reading. Once it seems more like a chore, something's wrong. Maybe that's why I'm bad at actually writing those reviews sometimes.

  10. Interacting more with my fellow bloggers, and reaching out to authors and publishers. I've been at this for half a year now, but I feel like I could be more part of the community. I want to get more original posts on this blog rather than just memes and reviews. I'm just always unsure about whether people actually want to read about the stuff I have ideas for! Or I have an awesome idea and then find out that somebody else is already doing it so my post would be redundant...

What do you think of my goals? Do we have some in common? Do you have any tips/suggestions for me? Oh, and please leave links to your posts, I'm curious about other people's goals! Maybe I can add to my list :)

Review: Throne of Glass, by Sarah J. Maas

Release date: August 2, 2012
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Format: Paperback, 404 pages

Description from goodreads:
Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.

In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.

Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?

I borrowed this one from a friend because I wanted to finally read it! I gave it back to her when we met the next day ^^' Great way to start off the year!
A note on the cover: It's perfect! I love the UK cover so much more than the US one. It's way badass, and it includes several small things that are important in the book, like her locket. Also: the back cover shows her from the back, but there she's wearing a ball gown, which makes sense once you've read the book.

Review:
I went into this book with some trepidation. When there was only the cover and no reviews yet, I thought this must be badass and totally awesome. Then the reviews came, and they were very mixed. They worried me. Some people found Celaena extremely arrogant, while others described her as sassy and a strong, kick-ass heroine.

After reading the book, I can see where both sides come from.
In the beginning, we meet Celaena as a slave in the salt mines of Endovier. She’s been in there for a year. The usual time of survival? A month. But Celaena was Adarlan’s best assassin at the age of only 16. She’s been trained by the king of assassins himself, and he didn't go easy on her. Still, life in the mines has scarred her, both physically and mentally, and that becomes clear once the story progresses. I grew to really like Celaena a lot and root for her, but it took a while. At the beginning, she really is as arrogant as everyone said. Full of her abilities. Full of her looks. However, over the course of the novel she grows as a character and changes for the better.

There’s another side to her: she’s lost it all. After a year in the mines, he body is skin and bones; she is no longer clothed in silks and jewels but in rags. She had everything, and she lost it all in one night. She cannot fully remember what happened, all that the reader knows is that she was betrayed by her own kind. Behind all her swagger, she is also vulnerable, and she tries her best not to be. She cannot afford mistakes if she is to survive what she’s been offered by Dorian, the crown prince of Adarlan: a chance to fight to be the king’s champion. If she beats her contestants, she will have to serve for four years. After that? Freedom. And Celaena’s desire for freedom, her joy at something as simple as sunlight on her skin and fresh clothes to wear, was among the parts that made me like her.

Another redeeming feature? Her thirst for knowledge. She’s not just some badass fighter, she also loves to read! I didn’t expect that. She is very angry at the king for outlawing magic in Adarlan, and for burning so many libraries and the thousands of years of knowledge and wisdom stored in them. She hates the very man she will have to serve if she wins, because he is responsible for the fall of her homeland and the death of her parents. She feels like a traitor. But she wants freedom no matter the cost. Once she arrives at the court of Adarlan and the first part with all the dresses etc. was over and her actual training for the fights began, I liked the whole book a lot better. Celaena can actually back up her big mouth, and I loved her in full assassin mode. She can be cruel, but she doesn’t necessarily like to be.

I feel like I’m rambling quite a bit here… the book just had a lot of layers and aspects, loads of backstory, and great world building! And it’s hard to talk about any one thing without including the others as they’re gradually revealed.
But let’s talk about guys for a bit… there’s a bit of a love triangle forming, and I can’t pick sides. On the one hand there’s Dorian: Prince, rich, pretty, desired by nearly every lady at court and aware of it. I didn’t expect to like him, but I did! I enjoyed his banter with Celaena and how they shared a passion for books. I didn’t expect him to be kind, to have vision for a different future for Adarlan than the one his father intended. I liked to see him and Celaena grow closer over time, yet thought it foolish.
Then there’s Chaol, captain of the guard. He’s Celaena’s mentor, he doesn’t take any of her bullshit. He trains her. He makes her go beyond her limits. He helps her regain her shape, try to reign in her temper and use her head. I really liked him too. He has the hardened edge of a fighter, but he’s still kind and caring. More realistic than Dorian, maybe a better fit? I’m not sure. All I can say is that I’m not usually a fan of love triangles, but I liked how it was done here. Oh, and of course I’m not going to tell how things pan out between the three of them ;)
I just have to mention a third boy, though he never was a love interest: Nox the thief! I really really liked him and the friendship he had with Celaena! I hope he makes an appearance in the sequel…

We meet many other characters in the book, some I loved, some I hated, but all more complex than they appear at first. There are quite a lot of subplots to the main one of Celaena having to beat the other candidates. There’s rebellion, slavery, friendship, jealousy, duty, betrayal, mystery, magic. The world building is fantastic, and I loved that there was a map at the beginning of the book! Places, dress, manner, customs… it was like mixture of medieval and Victorian. I liked that Celaena could be both a deadly weapon and a girl.

Oh, and another thing? There are so many YA books where there’s the heroine, and she’s fairly pretty and likeable, and any other female character is either a bitch or a non-threatening friend. Well, not here!! There’s princess Nehemia, and she’s just as strong and determined as Celaena! The two bond and I really loved their friendly relationship. They recognized each other as strong without making a rivalry out of it. Also, she’s a non-white person and I think she will play an important role in the sequel, so yay for some diversity! The issue of her ethnicity was dealt with well in the book, in my opinion.

So in the end, what’s my view of Throne of Glass? I enjoyed it a lot. It was complex, compelling, full of mystery and magic. Once some of the subplots are introduced, I was kept guessing. It was hard to put down. It had a heroine I eventually grew to like, root for and respect. It had two great love interests, amazing world building, and a nice mixture of blood and humor. I am definitely going to read the prequels (already read the first one) as well as impatiently waiting for the sequel, and I hope Sarah J. Maas will deliver! The set-up is in place, now let the big plot I’ve glimpsed come crashing down!

A few minor things: Celaena’s initial arrogance and the constant focus on her looks. I’m all for girls being confident in their bodies but I’m not sure this was the best way to handle the issue. Another point was that for a long time, we are simply told how awesome an assassin Celaena is or see her plotting stuff in her mind. I would have liked to actually see her in action sooner, but I understand that it would have been difficult to build a flashback like that into the book. I’m counting on the prequels.

Overall: a really enjoyable, hard to put down read with a unique world and great characters! I have so many theories I cannot talk about now and hope we’ll know a bit more about the sequel soon. Fans of High Fantasy, assassins, and kickass heroines will love this one! Those daunted by blood and action and more out for a fluffy romantic read with nice scenery and no political aspects should look elsewhere.

Have you read Throne of Glass? What was your take on it, and what do you think of my review? Sorry for making it so long >.< I just had so many thoughts...

Stacking the Shelves: Fairies & Lucky Finds

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews to show off the new books we got in the past week. This can be borrowed or bought, print or ebook, for review, gifted, won... just show your awesome new book friends :)

I had two hauls this past week, one was books I had ordered that finally arrived and one that was a stack I picked up at the second hand bookstore. Sorry for the not so good pics, my lamp started to smoke and stink after one pic and I had to shut it off and move to a different, not-so-great lamp...

Bought:
The Pledge, by Kimberly Derting
The Iron Knight, by Julie Kagawa
The Iron Legends, by Julie Kagawa

After reading The Iron Queen, I just had to have the rest of the series. I've also wanted to read The Pledge for a really long time now, and with The Essence coming out I was reminded of it. And since it's now out in paperback...

From the used book store:
Katzenwinter, by Wolfgang & Heike Hohlbein
Measure for Measure & All's Well That Ends Well, by William Shakespeare
Shades of Grey, by Jasper Fforde
The Devlin Diary, by Christi Phillips
Midnight's Children, by Salman Rushdie
If I Stay, by Gayle Forman

I read Katzenwinter about 10 years ago and it was one of my first fantasy books! I own more than twenty of Hohlbein's books and I've read even more that I borrowed from the library of the school I was going to at the time. I've been meaning to buy&re-read all his old novels from the 80s and 90s but in the same editions I read them way back when... which aren't easy to find anymore. So this was an awesome surprise and I just had to have it :D It's in good condition and was only 3.50 CHF (maybe like 4$. For new hardbacks you pay the equivalent of 30-40$ here).
The other books were about 2$ each. I've been curious about Midnight's Children for a while because I heard so much about it during my studies... and everyone seems to have read If I Stay!

Also, I got extremely lucky with the Shakespeare because look at this:
I don't know whether you can read it, but this was PRINTED IN 1904!!!!
And I paid not quite 2$ for it!!! It's old and worn and smells great :D The Spine is not readable anymore; I just saw this old book wedged between two random paperbacks and was curious about what it was.... and opened it to find this!! I mean it's more than 100 years old! I don't think it's a valuable edition or anything but I love it anyway because it's now the oldest book I own :)

What do you guys think of my haul? Do you love old books too, or do you think they... stink? What did you get this week?
Oh, and check out the giveaways in my left sidebar while you're here :) I changed the entry options for the I Am Alive giveaway so that you can now enter without commenting...

Promo, Bundle Deal, Giveaway: I Am Alive, by Cameron Jace

Hey guys :) Since the response to the cover reveal for Cameron Jace's Snow White Sorrow & Grimm Diaries prequels got such a great response, the author asked me to help get the word about his author series, a YA Dystopian Romance. It's called I Am Alive, and you can now buy a new, professionally edited version on amazon! It's a bundle pack of the first 3 episodes for 0.99$ from January 2 to January 4! That's three books for the price of one.

Interested? Here's a little more info:

Every girl dies - not every girl really lives.

Sixteen-year-old Decca Tenderstone feels captivated when she meets gorgeous & reckless Leo, who is arrogant, silent, beautiful, and shoots almost every one he meets.

Your everyday girl meets badboy lame story... hmm... with a twist...

They live in a dystopian future in Los Angeles where every sixteen-year-old is ranked on a scale from one to ten to determine their future. Outranks, who are considered a danger to society, are forced to attend the Monster Show, a brutal sacrificing ritual that is broadcasted worldwide on live TV, where rebellious teens are labelled Bad Kidz or Monsters and get to fight for their lives in deadly games.

The only way the jury still knows that you're still alive is to scream 'I Am Alive' as loud as you can every six hours. Lower your voice, and your dead.

While Decca and Leo can't stand each other, she will find out why she doesn't fit into any rank, and why her mother tried to kill her when she was seven.

Nothing will stand in her way as she has to make choices concerning love, life, staying alive, growing up, and finding out who she really is.

The setting with fighting and TV coverage reminds me of The Hunger Games, but the setting seems to be closer to our own present and the romance element is apparently stronger. I'm also curious about Decca's past and the whole ranking idea!

The series also got a new cover:
